A STUDY IN PAPER

Paper is more than just a simple, flat surface to print on – in this project, I wanted to explore paper as a tactile, 3-dimensional material.

Consisting of three open paper form sculptures and a composition of six paper texture studies, this project was a study in the characteristics of paper as a material. The paper forms were created using four-inch squares of 65 lb. cardstock, cut uniformly and fastened at no more than two points. Inspired by the shapes and forms of sea shells, these forms are both simple in their construction but complex in the way they play with light and shadow. The accompanying paper texture studies explored the other capabilities of paper on a primarily flat surface. Each study applied a different paper manipulation technique, including layering, bending, scoring, folding, twisting, and curling.
