The Covet Project

The Covet Project

THE COVET PROJECT (THESIS)

Covet is a satirical piece of design that explores how packaging and branding can be used to shape our perception of value.

By repackaging ordinary items that may typically be found at the dollar store as luxury items, this project is a physical exploration of the impact of design and how it may be used to manipulate one's perception of value. Luxury packaging often consists of a refined, crisp colour palette, luxe materials, and accents of metallics such as gold or silver. By utilizing these markers of luxury, a packaging system of a mock luxury brand was created to house ordinary objects. Each package comes with a mock authenticity card explaining the true value of the objects – all products were purchased for less than $2. In essence, this piece functions as a piece of commentary on luxury branding using design as an experiential medium.

The project consists of three repackaged objects – a candle (worth $2), a pencil (worth $0.17), and a glassware set (worth $1.50), as well as an accompanying booklet that explains the project. Luxe materials and finishes such as foil pressing, Plike paper, satin, and velvet were used throughout to maintain a high-end appearance. The booklet was hand bound with gold grommet detailing. It explains the purpose and idea behind the project, and provides before-and-after photos of the repackaged products.
